WHEELING, IL — The funeral profession is not for the faint of heart. You need the compassion to serve grieving families, the self-confidence and leadership skills to do the job, and the ability to find balance between work and your personal life. On September 20th, Funeral Professional Peer Support (FPPS) and the Cremation Association of North America (CANA) get to the heart of what makes funeral professionals tick.
Bill Sampson, Dodge Chemical Company Canada, and Lisa Smith, FPPS Wellness Director, facilitate the September meeting. Together, they’ll share what drew them to this profession and why they’ve kept at it for over a decade. “When people ask why you chose a career in funeral service, the typical answer is, ‘Because I want to help people, or I like helping people’” remarked Lisa. “Helping people is what we do.”
During the meeting, participants will be encouraged to reflect on why they were drawn to funeral service, why it’s important to them, and how the work has evolved throughout their career and particularly during the pandemic. These questions are built on noted author Simon Sinek’s work getting at the heart of why. Sinek has also said that “the best way to find joy in our lives or overcome struggle is with the help of others.” That’s why our Peer Support Meeting is open to the entire funeral community.
Join Bill, Lisa, and CANA to talk about your why with your peers and how to balance the stress of the job with the passion for service. Whether or not you have a particular pressing issue to discuss, the meetings are a valuable place to offer support to your colleagues, too!
